Judge Eric Allen Marks took the bench on The Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, General Division on March 1, 2021 and was elected to retain the position in 2022. Judge Marks was re-elected to a new term in 2024. He presides over approximately 250 civil cases and 80 felony cases in any given month.
Before his judicial career, Judge Marks had a general practice focused on criminal defense, family law, and appellate practice for 15 years. He has also worked part-time as an Assistant Public Defender for the Toledo Legal Aid Society for almost 10 of those years. Judge Marks brought significant trial experience with him to the bench, having directly handled over 1,000 criminal cases throughout Northwest Ohio, and more than 60 direct appeals in multiple state appellate districts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Judge Marks holds a Juris Doctor from The University of Toledo College of Law. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University, an Associate of Arts from The Ohio State University, and is a graduate of Perrysburg High School. During law school, Judge Marks worked as an extern for Judge Patrick J. Foley in the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, as well as for Chief Judge James G. Carr of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
Judge Marks was recently appointed by the Ohio Supreme Court to a three-year term on its Continuing Legal Education Commission. He is an active member of the Toledo Bar Association and currently serves on its Board of Directors. Judge Marks has served on various committees over the years and was Chair of the Court of Appeals Committee. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Lucas County Bar Association, and a former member of the Maumee Valley Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association.
As an Eagle Scout, Judge Marks has volunteered as an adult leader with Scouting America for almost 30 years. He currently serves as an Advisory member of the Erie Shores Council’s board. He served a two-year mission for his church in the central region of Italy after high school, and since returning to the Toledo area for law school, Judge Marks has served in various leadership roles within his church. He is a bishop, and led a congregation in Toledo for 5 years. He spent another 5 years in a regional leadership role overseeing congregations and youth groups in Allen, Auglaize, Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Sandusky, Seneca, Williams, and Wood counties.
Judge Marks is married to Renae, and together they have three children that are their pride and joy.
